What is intentional focus?
Recently, I have been speaking with students about the value of honing our ‘focusing’ skills in an intentional way. In a world of constant notifications, endless scrolling and rapid-fire multitasking, the ability to sustain focus has become increasingly rare, and therefore increasingly valuable. Author and researcher Cal Newport describes ‘deep work’ as the ability to focus without distraction on cognitively demanding tasks, calling it a modern superpower in today’s economy.
Research highlights for us that distracted attention reduces learning, creativity and productivity. Students and adults alike are often interrupted before meaningful thinking can occur. Yet the people who can concentrate deeply, persevere through challenge and think critically are those most likely to thrive in the future. In many ways, sustained focus is becoming a rare commodity in the ‘attention economy’, where countless platforms compete for our time and mental energy.
At Northholm, we intentionally cultivate habits of attention, perseverance and intellectual depth. Whether through purposeful classroom routines, rich discussion, reading programs, cocurricular opportunities or the encouragement of thoughtful reflection, our students are learning that meaningful growth requires time, patience and concentration.
There are practical ways families can help strengthen this intentional skill at home:
- Encourage device-free study and reading periods
- Create quiet spaces for uninterrupted thinking
- Prioritise sleep and healthy routines
- Model focused conversations and attentive listening
- Celebrate effort, persistence, and deep engagement rather than constant busyness
Sustained, intentional focus is not simply an academic skill; it is a life skill. It enables students to learn deeply, build resilience, solve complex problems and develop creativity. In a distracted world, the capacity to concentrate may well become one of the defining advantages of the next generation. We want to be part of that!
As a school community, we remain committed to nurturing this increasingly important human capability in every Northholm student.
