Year 10 Leadership Camp

There are four key dimensions to student leadership at Northholm, which are measured as part of our student metrics: leading self, leading academically, leading with others and changing your world. Each dimension is matched with four competencies – self-awareness, communication, influence and learning agility – so students graduate with both the mindset and skill set to shape positive change.

One example of leadership in action occurs within our Camps Programs, which contributes to the personal growth of students by providing a unique opportunity for practical engagement, team work, self-reliance and independence, challenging students to take risks in a structured environment and developing a sense of connection among their peers.

Recently, the Year 10 Leadership Camp at Attunga in the Southern Highlands saw students engaging in team-building challenges as the bush became an outdoor classroom. Zip-lines, a giant swing and navigation challenges nudged students far outside of their comfort zones and by nightfall, GPS waypoints had been replaced with campfire stories. Every blister, rope burn and cheer told a story of each student pushing limits and finding courage in mid-air.

For some Year 10s, this adventure is the catalyst to nominate for the Year 11 Leadership Program, stand for House Captain or the Student Representative Council, or mentor younger peers through the Peer Support initiative – each pathway inviting them to practise purposeful, community-minded leadership every day.

“Leadership plays an important role in the development of Year 10 students as they face the challenges of today’s society,” says Mrs Jenny Plüss, Head of Operations. “Students stepped outside their comfort zone and experienced the value of teamwork and resilience, demonstrating considerable personal growth.”
