What is student leadership?

What is student leadership?

Leadership is one of the greatest opportunities given to young people, but it is also one of the greatest responsibilities. At its heart, leadership is not about titles, positions or privileges; it is about people.

Robert K. Greenleaf, who first coined the phrase ‘servant leadership’, once wrote: “The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.”

This perspective is as relevant today as it was when he first wrote it. True leadership is not about being at the front for the sake of recognition, but about lifting others up, creating space for voices to be heard, and ensuring the wellbeing of those you lead. Our new student leaders have been chosen not just because of their ability to organise or speak, but because of their demonstrated commitment to others. This is outplayed in classrooms, on the playground, in co-curricular life and in the way they treat their peers.

At Northholm Grammar, we believe leadership is best measured not by how many follow, but by how many are encouraged, supported and inspired. Again, leadership is about people, caring for them, walking alongside them, and sometimes even stepping back to allow others to shine. I encourage all our students, whether they hold a badge or not, to see themselves as leaders in their own right. Every act of kindness, every moment of encouragement, every stand for fairness is an act of servant leadership.

We look forward to seeing the way Northholm Grammar’s student leaders live out this calling, not for themselves, but for the flourishing of our whole community.
