Courtside in the USA: Northholm students take on the American basketball experience

During the January holidays, 15 Northholm Grammar students travelled to the United States for a two-week Basketball Tour, immersing themselves in elite sport, new environments and invaluable learning experiences. Accompanied by two staff members, the group visited Los Angeles and Phoenix, embracing every opportunity both on and off the court.

Throughout the tour, students experienced basketball at the highest level. They attended three NBA games, two NCAA College games and a Junior Varsity fixture, gaining insight into the intensity, preparation and professionalism required to compete at elite levels. Observing these environments first-hand encouraged students to reflect on their own training habits, mindset and aspirations.

Importantly, the tour extended well beyond watching games. Students trained and scrimmaged with local high school teams and academies, adapting to different playing styles and competitive expectations. Skill development sessions led by former NBL and NBA players provided technical insight and challenged students to refine their craft. Stepping into unfamiliar gyms and competing against new opponents required resilience, teamwork and confidence — qualities our students demonstrated with maturity.

A visit to the Phoenix Mercury WNBA training facility offered a valuable perspective on the standards of professional sport. Touring the state-of-the-art facility highlighted the commitment to preparation, recovery and performance that underpins success. Students also explored the campus of Arizona State University, broadening their understanding of potential international study pathways and experiencing the scale and culture of an American university.

Beyond basketball, the group engaged with the cultural landscape of each city. In Los Angeles, students visited Universal Studios, Venice Beach and Santa Monica Pier, experiencing the energy and diversity of the city. In contrast, the desert landscape of Phoenix offered a striking change of scenery, prompting students to appreciate the natural beauty and vastness of the Arizona environment.

Throughout the two weeks, students represented Northholm with pride. They demonstrated respect, adaptability and a willingness to step beyond their comfort zones. The tour strengthened friendships, fostered independence and reinforced the value of embracing opportunity.

Experiences such as the USA Basketball Tour extend learning far beyond the classroom. We thank Mr Lockhart and Mrs Stimson for their leadership and commitment in making this enriching experience possible for our students.
