The Northholm Institute for Cultivating Excellence

Launching in 2026, the Northholm Institute for Cultivating Excellence (NICE) will be a beacon for developing excellence in teaching and learning for all students, encourage the growth of leadership in both students and staff, and ensure the school makes a strong contribution to educational debate, professional practice and innovation.

At Northholm, we believe excellence in learning is predicated on excellence in teaching, and excellent teaching results from well-trained staff. The Institute will aim to develop, curate and disseminate best practice in teaching and learning, positioning Northholm as a place where teachers will be attracted to join, grow in their practice and make a long-term contribution to the education of our young people.

NICE will drive initiatives to ensure academic excellence, based on evidence-based strategies, and will be supported by a team of leaders who will provide instructional leadership in ‘what excellence looks like’ across Primary and Secondary. As part of this landmark initiative, strategic partnerships will be forged with Universities and other educational institutions, to establish an empowering network that will help the School become a place of educational excellence, a leader in education, and a destination School for the very best in the industry.

The Dean of the Institute

Following a national and international search, Mrs Fiona Walker was appointed Dean of the Northholm Institute commencing January 2026.

Fiona is a highly regarded educational leader whose career reflects a deep commitment to evidence-based teaching, instructional coaching and the growth of both teachers and students. She currently serves as an Education Consultant at AISNSW, where she has supported hundreds of teachers across the independent sector, led the Primary Numeracy Project, co-designed the K-12 Instructional Coaching course and developed the ‘BUILDS’ coaching cycle to strengthen classroom practice and student outcomes.

Her experience spans leadership and teaching roles in Australia and the United Kingdom, including Deputy Principal and Acting Principal at Northside Montessori School, and classroom and leadership positions at Tara Anglican School for Girls and Arden Anglican School.

Fiona’s work with NESA and ACARA panels, her conference presentations on high-impact practice, and her design of practical professional learning further demonstrate her capacity to lift standards, mentor staff and embed a culture of continual improvement.

The Dean of the Northholm Institute for Cultivating Excellence will lead a specialised team of instructional leaders across our school, with portfolios to specifically enhance K-6 Literacy, K-6 numeracy and across Secondary disciplines and leadership.
