Success at the Australian School Band & Orchestra Festival

SWE-Verbruggen-Hall

On Sunday 28 July, Northholm Grammar Schools Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Concert Band performed exceptionally well at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival.

SymphonicWind Ensemble received a Silver Award which is a great result in a section of 20 competing bands, most double (or more) the group in size.

Concert Band received a Gold Award, which was an outstanding result. In addition, the band received the Brolga Music Encouragement Award, which entitles them to choose a selection of arrangements from the Brolga Music library – and the internationally renowned adjudicator Mr. Monte Mumford, offered to give the band a special workshop, which we promptly took up, inviting Mr. Mumford to come out for our rehearsal last Wednesday.

Mr. Mumford gave the young musicians lots of tips and strategies on a range of topics, helping them to improve their understanding of performance techniques and ensemble blend.

Two of the featured pieces proudly performed by the bands in the Festival were ‘Side Show Alley’ and ‘A Story to Tell’, both original compositions by our conductor, Mr Tim Ferrier.

What is both unique and positive about our co-curricular program is that there is no separation with age, so consequently Concert Band includes both primary and secondary-aged students. This allows young musicians  of any age to progress through the program based on musical aptitude and not by age or year group.

Congratulations to Concert Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble and special thanks to Mr. Ferrier!
